She's recently made a verbal commitment to Belmont University. Dickson County High senior Katie Story recently made a verbal commitment to sign with Belmont University to play golf.It was a decision that was three years in the making. Earlier this week Katie (who has made it to the state tourney the last two years - district champ her freshman and junior years) sat down and talked about her search for the right school. In middle school I played a bunch of different sportsto see which one I wanted to continue with and I picked golf, Story said.So I quit everything else except for golf to focus on it during high school, and I wanted to play college golf. I didnt know where as a freshman but I wanted to get better to see where I could possibly go.All in the FamilyWhile golf is something of a family tradition with Katie her younger brother Jack also competes on the Cougars golf team and her father Brad Story was the golf pro at GreyStone and at the former Dickson Country Club she said she wasnt persuaded to pick any sport in particular.I played a lot of team sports and Im really competitive and Id rather just be able to blame myself because its only me if I play bad at golf instead of the team, she explained. Its been a long journey for Story. The first time she picked up a golf club was around the age of four and the sport has been a part of her life ever since, watching her father go off and compete and win various tournaments in and out of Tennessee. It wasnt until middle school that she began to take the Mbt Sko Norge sport seriously. You can go out and practice by yourself and its peaceful. If you hit a bad shot, its on you, you cant blame anyone else, Story said. Its a hard sport and its hard to get better at it but its fun to go out every day and practice. The good thing about golf was that it provided Katie a good example of what patience can win you something that helped her in the process of finding the right college to play for after high school.I had a lot of bigger schools looking at me, and I had a lot of smaller schools looking at me, but ultimately I decided that I wanted to go to a smaller campus that was private because Ive always been in public school. The ProcessYou have to send out resumes to everybody, find email addresses, make your resume. With golf, you have to make a swing video to send to themthen theyll email you back and you can tell them your tournament schedule so they can come and watch you.But as a junior you can only email and then in September of your senior year is when they can start calling you. Its kind of a weird process because you cant actually talk to the coaches face-to-face until youre a senior, so if they come to watch you, sophomore or junior year, they can watch you but they cant say anything to you.For Story the decision finally came down to what all college athletes are looking for the Salvatore Ferragamo Shoes right combination of the right academic program, the right athletic program and the right financial aid package. She wants to study physical therapy.Ultimately it comes down to how much money they offer youit was an offer you couldnt pass up, Story said. Add tthe fact that Belmont is a Division I NCAA school that competes in the OVC and it was a winning combination for her.I wanted to go to a school where I could do my school work and my golf instead of having to stress with both of themI want to get a good education and play golf.I dont want to play golf and not do well in school.High school athletes can officially start signing with colleges between Nov. 13 and Nov. 20.Start EarlyHer advice to freshman looking to compete in college get your resume out thereso that youre on their radar because they have to know that you want to play in college. You have to show interest in them.Start emailing them so they can come and watch you because once they watch you theyll know if they want you and thats when the process starts of talking, unofficial visitsits a process.
